As well as shopping I will try and cover the cost of living in Ireland. Everybody keeps telling us how expensive it is to live in Ireland and yes I suppose if you go out eating and drinking every night in the centre of Dublin you are going to get through a few Euro. But in general we have found day to day living not to bad. Certain things are expensive such as owning a car, Insurance and road tax is more expensive than the UK but petrol is about a third cheaper over here. There is no council tax over here, but one surprise we had, after realising our bin wasn't being emptied we found you had to buy a tag from the local shop costing 6 Euro which had to be attached to your bin before it would be emptied, this is required each time the bin has to be emptied. This does however encourage you to use the recycle centres more. Electric and Gas is more expensive but not horrendously expensive. As we are going to be living in the country we will have our own well and although there are no water rates there will be some maintenance costs involved. We will also have an Oil tank as the central heating system is oil. Don't panic the Cities and towns etc are generally mains everything.

If you are not to bothered about designer gear there are a couple of shops we use a lot Penny's which is a general cloths shop and is very cheap but the cloths are pretty good. We also use Dunnes Store which is a clothes, household and food store which again we find pretty cheap. You also have your Tesco and Marks and Spencer over here. We do miss ASDA and Ikea but there are Plans for an Ikea to come to Dublin. The problem with Ikea is Ireland have strict laws on the floor space a retailer can take up but they are looking at making an exception for Ikea. Believe it or not it is still popular over here Trips are organised just so people can go over to the UK and visit Ikea.

Property is expensive if you are looking to buy in Dublin, but if you are prepared to commute you can get some stunning properties in the country that would cost you a fortune where ever it was in the UK.
