Wexford comes from the Norse Weissfiord meaning, the fjord of the flats. Wexford is also known as the "Model County". Wexford also benefits from the best of Irish weather. The town of Wexford was captured during the Norman Invasion in 1169. Wexford possesses many wrecks such as Viking Long boats as well as submarines from World War II. The famous battle of Vinegar Hill also took place in Enniscorthy, County Wexford during the 1798 Rebellion.

Known as the "Model County," Wexford boasts coastal villages, sunny seashores, wildlife reserves, an Opera Festival and a Strawberry Fair amongst other things.

With the Atlantic ocean on its south coast and the Irish sea on its east, it is full of small coastal inlets, safe sandy beaches, delightful fishing creeks and bustling, busy harbours.

The county is also rich in history and heritage with an abundance of ancient churces and towers, heritage parks and museums tracing the life and times of the county from the dawn of its history.

Above all, the county is rich in memories of the 1798 Rising, when insurgent pikemen fought heroically against overwhelming odds.

Nowadays, the county offers the challenge of many top class golf courses as well as the excitement of horse and greyhound racing. Don't forget to visit Curracloe Beach where the Stephen Spielberg movie "Saving Private Ryan" was filmed.

Wexford offers cosy coastal villages, sunny seashores with numerous and well presented beaches which are tranquil and inviting such as Courtown, Curracloe, Duncannon and Rosslare. Famous for the range and extent of bird life, it also features bird watch reserves, the most significant being that of North Sloblands, Wexford Wildfowl Reserve. Visitors can even turn back the clock and explore the county's unique culture and heritage attractions through its open air museum of ramparts and castles, abbeys, manor houses and one of the oldest operational lighthouses in the world, the Hook Lighthouse. Gardens lovers will thoroughly enjoy the very famous John F. Kennedy Park. and Arboretum celebrating the connection US President Kennedy has with the town of New Ross where you will also find Ireland's newest attraction, the Dunbrody Heritage Ship which is an accurate, full size, ocean-going recreation of the actual timber-built ship which played a leading part in 19th century emigration to the USA. So come relax and enjoy the many attractions awaiting you in Wexford and let our famous hospitality wash up over you like a wave – you’ll be among friends here

The prehistoric Wexford is known only through the intriguing stone monuments and artefacts left by the shadowy predecessors of the Celts. From these silent witnesses of the past we can say that Wexford was occupied over 6,000 years ago and that primitive agriculture and stock rearing was the principal means of sustenance for the community. The only complete dolmen in the county is at Bree, south of Enniscorthy. This dates from the 3rd millennium B.C.

The Vikings invaded Wexford in the late 8th century. It was only when Brian Boru challenged and defeated a powerful Leinster and Norse alliance in 1014 that the rule of the Vikings was broken. Their presence remained in Ireland up to and beyond the coming of the Normans.
