Tipperary comes from the Irish word
Tiobraid Arann - the well of Ára. Tipperary is known for its coal mines
and slate quarries. Tipperary borders the mountain ranges of the Galtees,
the Knockmealdowns and the Silvermines. The Rock of Cashel is one of
Tipperary's most popular historical sites. Clonmel, Tipperary's largest
town comes from the Irish Cluain Meala - the pasture of honey.
Tipperary is Ireland's largest inland
county.
The River Suir flows through Tipperary and is noted for its brown trout.
The lush valley of the Glen of Aherlow lies between the Galtee Mountains
and the wooded ridge of Slievenamuck. Historically an important pass
between Limerick and Tipperary and a notorious hideout for outlaws,
today it offers perfect opportunities for riding, cycling, rambling and
fishing.
Places not to miss while in Tipperary include the Rock of Cashel, the
towns of Clonmel, Roscrea and Carrick-on-Suir, Cahir Castle, and Holy
Cross Abbey.
Looming over the town of Cashel, the medieval Rock of Cashel is an
eerie, magnificent sight, especially at night when it is lit by
floodlights. This rocky stronghold was a symbol of royal and priestly
power for more than a thousand years. Rising dramatically out of the
otherwise fairly flat Tipperary plain, much of the medieval complex is
still standing. It is an outstanding example of Romanesque architecture.
Clonmel is County Tipperary's principal town. Previously an Anglo-Norman
stronghold, it is a bustling lively town with quirky architecture and
vibrant nightlife. Roscrea is a heritage town with an impressive castle
and whole world of history.
The sleepy town of Carrick-on-Suir is well worth a visit for its air of
timelessness and old-fashioned grace. Situated on a rocky island in the
River Suir, Cahir Castle is one of the most imposing castles in Ireland.
Now a popular film set, this well-preserved fortress dates back to the
13th century.
A scenic county, fashioned by the Galtee Mountains, adorned by romantic
and mysterious Slievenamon and everywhere a lush, multi-hued green
landscape. The plains of Tipperary are birthplace for some of the
world's most successful bloodstock. Hurling, horses and hunting, history
and heritage blend in a palette of motion in locations and attractions
which are sure to please. Tipperary is particularly rich in
archaeological sites of interest including the Rock of Cashel in Cashel
Heritage Town and Cahir Castle in picturesque Cahir Heritage Town. These
traditional attractions are now complemented by the new Excel Centre in
Tipperary Town which boasts an interpretative centre depicting
Tipperary's past. In Clonmel Town, the South Tipperary County Museum
takes the visitor through the fascinating history of the county, from
prehistoric to modern times. Walkers and outdoor enthusiasts are well
serviced in this county of hills and vales. A county of contrasts - high
hills and verdant valleys and everywhere, just as in ancient Ireland, in
Tipperary the visitor is king.
