Roscommon comes from the Irish 'Ros' a wooded, gentle height and Coman, the name of the county's famous saint and the first bishop of the see. Rathcroghan was home to the Kings of Connacht and then to the High Kings of Ireland. Dr Douglas Hyde (first Irish president) was born in County Roscommon and the GAA park in County Roscommon is named after him - Hyde Park. Strokestown Park House and Famine Museum is an award-winning museum for its portrayal of the great Irish Famine.

Roscommon is a county of fertile farmland, extensive bogs and placid lakes.

The Great Famine of 1845-8 had a devastating effect here. Many died and more emigrated when the potato blight destroyed the county's main food crop. The famine museum at Strokestown Park House gives a unique insight into the lives of the Irish people who battled against hunger and want.

One of Ireland's principal lakeside parks, Lough Key Forest Park, is located five miles east of the town of Boyle. Over 840 acres in size, it offers nature walks, ring forts, monuments, cruising, fishing, a bog-garden, an old ice-house, picnic grounds, and a fully-serviced caravan and camping park. Deer wander freely through the park.

Clonalis House, a victorian manor outside of Castlerea, is the ancestral home of the O'Conors, the last High Kings of Ireland and Kings of Connaught. This old Gaelic family can trace its heritage back 1500 years and the ruins of their gabled 17th century home are visible in the grounds.

Roscommon offers an enchanting glimpse of hidden treasure to those who seek. Brimful of history and heritage, Roscommon boasts many archaeological structures including Rathcroghan, ancient home of the High Kings. From more recent times, great houses and castles are to be found. Here, a more tranquil and serene beauty reigns, framed by mountain, moor land and lake . Nature and wildlife flourish in undisturbed habitat. The warmth of the people is tangible, part of the essence of the county.

Roscommon is great for you water sport fanatics offering coastline, several rivers and many lakes. There is also horse riding , fishing and golf. There are also many historical site that are well worth a visit.
